My sister and 

My sister and me 

Lakeside fun in the sun and

Food always in the oven in

A house that always smelled like and

Felt like lots and lots of lovin’

Even when the rain poured and poured

The best childhoods are made of days of 

Feeding ducks on the lake and 

Celebrating with homemade birthday cakes and

Summer train rides to New York 

The smoothest rides despite the rockiest of terrain 

I’m not talking about the train

I didn’t understand until I was about 14

That life wasn’t as perfect as it seemed

Two people, they argued and sometimes they screamed 

But that didn’t touch those 3

Love was everywhere, all around 

My momma made me feel like I could do and 

I could be anything — unapologetically— under the sun and

My daddy made me feel protected and 

Highly respected 

I was the princess…well, the youngest one 

Good morning hugs and good night kisses

Mommy and daddy were the tooth fairy and Santa’s Christmas wishes 

Whimsical and

Mystical, it all felt like a dream 

Even when the waves rocked the boat out of steam 

At the end of the day 

I can always say that 

There were 2 people + 1 love times 3 at
